As part of the initial screening offered at booking with a midwife, many midwives offer a screening swab for gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and trichomonas. This screening is your choice, but is recommended as these infections can affect your baby.
These three infections are sexually transmitted, and can be asymptomatic (not show signs of infection), so you could have them without knowing.
The booking blood tests you are offered also include screening for syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B.
The screening test for gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and trichomonas is a single swab, which you can do yourself. If your swab is positive for any of these infections, you will be offered treatment and support. It is important for your partner to be treated also to prevent reinfection.
